What are the major crops of Goa?

- Rice - low lands, cashew - uplands, coconut and others in plains and valleys.

 

Rice is major crop of Goa but still farmers are abandoning, why?

- Rice cultivation is becoming uneconomical owing to higher cost of production. The labour is costly and scarce and relative economies for rice in comparison to other crops is less

 

What is your recommendation for improving profitability of rice?

- Varietal selection.. a) uplands where jyoti is cultivated to be replaced by HYV - MO-17 to yield 1.0 t/ha more.

b) Lowlands, where Jaya is cultivated to be put upto hybrids and scented rice. Hybrids like KRH-2, Sahyadri and scented rice like Pusa sugandh-5, Pusa sugandh-2 are recommended.

 

Whether rice hybrids are feasible in Goa?

-Yes

 

If  hybrids are well suited why they are not catching up more with farmers?

-Quality considerations of hybrids are yet to convince the farmers and marketing agencies.

 

Whether Basmati cultivation is feasible in Goa?

- Yes.

 

What is your recommendation for rice fallows?

-Groundnut cultivation (Var. TAG-24)

 

What is recommended for coastal saline areas?

- Salt tolerant rice varieties like CSR-27, CSR-10, Pannel-3

 

Are the local types of cashew seedlings better than the grafts with respect to incidence of  Tea Mosquito Bug (TMB) and Cashew stem and root borer?

-It is not so

 

Does cashew really require so much care with respect to crop management?

- Cashew can with stand hard conditions but responds tremendously to better management practices. More the care you take more will be the output.

 

Why tender coconut water is not popularised as health drink although it is well known to have nutritional properties.

- No doubt tender coconut water is good health drink, efforts have to be made both at policy makers and producers level to create awareness among the general public about its benefits.

 

Where we will get sufficient planting materials of improved turmeric varieties?

Research institutes like ICAR RC Goa, Indian Institute of Spices Research, calicut will be able to provide limited planting material provided indent is given well in advance.

 

How to process turmeric rhizomes after harvesting?

Commercial processing technologies are already available. Information can be obtained from ATDC, ICAR RC Goa.

 

How to control coconut mite? 

  • This is a severe problem and there are no complete control measures. However, palms receiving good irrigation and standard fertilizer dose of NP and increased level of K (1.5 kg/h) have shown lower intensity of pest.

  • Wherever possible neem based insecticides can be sprayed on small (marble size) nuts.

How to control stem borer in cashew?

  •  During the last few years the severity of this pest is increasing throughout the state of Goa. Preventive control can be assured by applying coal tar and kerosene (2:1) on the stem up to a height of 1m from the ground twice a year during November and May.

  • Good preventive control of this pest can also be achieved by drenching/soaking the stem (1m from ground) with 0.5% chlorpyriphos 20EC twice a year during November and May.

  • Infested cashew trees in early stage of attack can be saved by injecting concentrated monocrotophos (10ml/L) in an around the infested stem/collar region of the tree. The injection may be repeated after 15 days.

How to control fruit fly attack in cucurbits?

  • A simple cost effective and eco friendly way of managing fruit flies in cucurbits is by squirting (splashing) 10% banana/jaggery solution on the underside of the leaves in 7x7 m2 grid at approximately 200 splashes /h.

How to control red palm weevil in coconut?

  •  This pest attacks young and healthy coconut palms. Infested palms if not detected early and treated with insecticide often die.

  • Avoid making wounds to the palm

  • Cut leaf/ frond petiole 1m away from the base

  • In endemic pockets trap the adults using pheromone traps@ 1-2 traps/h which should be set under shade.

  • Ensure weekly servicing (change the food [200g green coconut petiole] and insecticidal solution [carbofuran 3G] in the trap)

  • Infested palms can be cured by injecting concentrated solution of monocrotophos 36SL @ 5-10 ml/L. Repeat the injection after 15 days.

How to control stored grain insect pest?

  • Ensure proper drying of grains

  • Clean and sun dries the storage vessels well before storing the grains.

How to control pseudo stem weevil in banana?

  • Uproot and burn infested plants.

  • Injection method: Make 2-3 holes, 10cm deep about 60cm from the ground. The hole should go down and sideways into the trunk. With the use of dispensing bottle pour 100ml 0.05 % monocrotophos (36 SL) into the holes.  

  • Trapping: Longitudinal Split Pseudostem Traps (LPST) - Split pseudostem traps (45cm long) are made from the pseudostem pieces cut longitudinally in two halves. Such traps are laid randomly in the field @ 25 traps per acre.

  • After harvesting the bunch remove and destroy the pseudostem from ground level so as to avoid it serving as a breeding site for the pest.

How to control rhinocerous beetle in coconut? 

  • Extract adult beetles from frond during pest abundant

  • Prophylactic leaf axil filling with 25g Sevin with 200g river sand or 8-10 nephthalene balls per palm to repel the pest.

  • Treat breeding sites (cow dung /compost pits) with 0.02% carbaryl.
